Inauguration at freed.in/2009

freed.in/2009 had a very unique inauguration ceremony. In any case, freed.in has never had a chief guest other than members of the community, but this year there was also no lighting of the lamp, I guess the economic slowdown, caused the tenting and venue arrangements guy to skip the lamp and save his oil/ghee!

Women in FOSS

This is the first freed.in to have the largest number of women speakers so far: five and counting. The final count may just be more, thanks to the community-speaks, and the Birds of a Feather (BoF) sub-events. All of them are speaking at freed.in for the first time, and almost all of them, for the first time, at any national FOSS event.

Even more impressively, we’ve noticed an electromagnetic pulse of a surge, in the number of women delegates registering at our site. The first volunteer-meet held on Tuesday also had a few women opting in and taking charge of tasks.

For the record: All of them are from India. Also, if we were not limited by the available time-slots and speaker-halls, these numbers would have been even higher.

Let’s just see how these numbers translate in the realworld, at freed.in over the next two days.

OSSD - mini-unconference at freed.in/2009

This year, we would be running a OSDD “unconference” along the main
conference, which incidently kicks off with a keynote on OSDD.

Our basic flow would be
[1] Discussion of the various work-plans, into which the OSDD project is divided
[2] Bat data generating methods against data analysis methods
Potential take-home: A list of experiments and data analysis
methods which would give us an idea of what equipment to build into
our virtual laboratory, and tools to build into our analysis workbench
units of the portal.
[3] Soft computing methods: We have invited many of the top soft
computing experts from across the country.
[4] Funding patterns required to build a community
[5] Open meeting with project leaders

Day 2 would focus on the grid tools and methods required to build an
instrument grid.

All able bodies on this list in and around Delhi, are invited to come
over to JNU on the 20th and 21st, Feb, 2009. Please register at

work

We would welcome ideas on how to include those who cannot make it physically.

The First Non-Technical College Makes its Debut at freed.in

Deen Dayal Upadhyay College (DDUC) has the distinction of being the first non-technical college to make a presentation at freed.in. An enthusiastic and passionate bunch of students and faculty from the English Department are eagerly looking forward to share their experiences, feel inspired, and inspire others, at freed.in.

This vibrant and buzzing college from Delhi University, has galvanized its students from just critical appreciation, to active contribution to English literature. You may discover their initiatives at DDUC

These students have been toiling since four months, mentored by an equally-inspired group of faculty: Dr Anubha Mukherjee, Dr. Pramesh Ratnakar, Dr Jayini Adhyapak, Dr. Garima, and Dr. Jyotsna.

Their talk is scheduled at 5 PM, Saturday, 21 February 2009. Please be there to witness this small historic moment in the continuing saga of freed.in.
