Freedom in Technology and Software

Fun and Fatigue

Over 700 people, two days of sheer fun, excitement and lots of FOSS. That would be essentially what happened at freed.in/2007. More than 40 talks, workshops and two vibrant panel discussions over the two days of the event. From what we are hearing, the event went off well. There were the usual to be expected slip-ups as well, but fortunately, the community is very tolerant with that and everyone had a good time.

The amazing thing with community events is just that, they are community driven. Speakers stepped forward and became volunteers or maybe they got volunteered. Took charge of halls, took charge of talks and took charge of workshops. Impromptu hack sessions, BoFs etc just happened all over. The two days just went by in a flash!

Before we even got a chance to recover from the event, many of us found our way on the bus to Manali. The trip was supposed to be for all speakers and volunteers. Many of the volunteers had to drop out due to examinations, work and prior commitments, but those who went had an absolutely great time. We landed up being a total of 13 people speakers and volunteers and a large bus. More on the trip as we recover, but in the meantime, keep a lookout for photos and reports from around the web. We shall publishing stuff on the site on a regular basis so do come back.

And yes the next freed.in will be sooner than you think!

And the fun begins

It took its own sweet time, but we now do have the schedule ready now. We decided to name the halls after the characters in Rudyard Kipling’s famous “Jungle Book” not to be confused with the Disney movie based on the book. So you will see some rather strange hall names. Hopefully, JNU will not be a jungle for you, look forward to seeing you all at freed.in/2007

Schedule is available here.

Schedules for Day -1 and Day -2.

The organisers of freed.in 2007 (http://freed.in/) are pleased to announce that we will host a GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) key signing party on both days of the event. A GPG key signing party enables people from diverse places to verify, validate and sign each others’ GPG keys. This helps build the Web of Trust, and ultimately moves towards achieving the goal of empowering individuals with the means for private and secure communications.

More details on GPG can be found at http://gnupg.org/ .

The How to Participate in a GPG Keysigning Party document at http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Main/KeysigningParties gives details on participating. Please contact Raj Mathur at <mailto:raju (at) linux-delhi (dot) org> if you have any queries.

Join the party, add your key here. You will need at least one photo-id of yourself that you are willing to share.

The venue for freed.in/2007:

This years venue is the School of Information Technology at the Jawarlal Nehru University. Many people have called/emailed in to ask for directions. Sudev Barar put up a very nice page on the freed.in wiki. There is a map included along with various sets of directions and even a few places of interest around JNU. Thanks Sudev for the effort.

For those who are just not satisfied with short 45 minute talks, we do have the longer version of the programme available. You can attend some very focussed sessions of 2 hrs and 4 hrs duration. This years list includes:

The file is not a very high-res file, but if you need one please feel free to mail info at freed do in and we shall be glad to provide you with a high-res pdf or eps for full and glorious print possibilities.

The first cut-off list is finally here. If your name does not appear on ths list, don’t be disappointed. We are still working to get the final list in place. The talk abstracts speaker profiles are also still being updated and will be linked directly from here. In the meantime, get an idea of who is coming to freed.in/2007.

Update: Slightly cleaned out list of talks for freed.in/2007 There are still some talks listed as TBA (to be announced) and that shall happen soon. But look at the list carefully some new speakers added now:
